Does it take a long time to learn Slovak? Is it a difficult language? And is it even necessary to learn it if you want to move to Slovakia?
Let’s get to the bottom of this. ![]()
Language is the medium in which the self and the world come together. It is hard to argue with the expression of philosopher Hans Georg Gadamer. And if you are determined to get to know the Slovak Republic intimately, we advise you to pay attention to the language as well.
Unfortunately, not all Slovaks speak English, Russian or Ukrainian well. You will feel more comfortable if you take care to stock up on at least basic phrases and words.
It is worth noting that Slovak is quite easy, especially for those who already speak Russian or Ukrainian. All these languages are part of the Slavic group, so they are close and have consonant words.
For example:
– girl in Slovak – dievča (devča),
– home – dom,
– green – zelená,
– dog – pes.
There are some pretty funny and quickly memorized analogies:
– parachute – padák,
– skyscraper – mrakodrap.
– perfume – voňavka
What should you pay attention to right away?
► Features of stress in Slovak – falls on the first syllable in a word.
► Some vowels are stretched to create a sing-songy sound. In writing, they are marked with a sign similar to the accent in Russian – á, í, ý and so on.
► Sometimes familiar words that sound similar in Slovak have completely different meanings.
For example:
– attention – pozor,
– love – láska,
– fresh – čerstvé,
– grocery store – potraviny.
Of course, you can count on the younger generation to pick up your English, and the older generation to pick up Russian. No one can cancel the language of facial expressions and gestures either.
But still, it will be easier and more fun with knowledge of Slovak.
You don’t need a translator’s education or superpowers. All that matters in learning Slovak is your desire and motivation. And what better way to motivate you than to move!
