From the end of November Slovakia becomes especially dressed up – active preparations for Christmas begin 
In Bratislava itself, in the Old Town, a large fir tree is installed, garlands delight the eye on the streets, and Christmas decorations and sweets greet you in the stores.
The period that begins a month before Christmas is called Advent. It coincides with the shortest days of the year. It is believed that this is the time when the balance shifts between the forces of good and evil, light and darkness.
In order that the dark forces do not win, it is customary to conduct special rites.
To protect against evil spirits, houses are decorated with spruce wreaths in which candles are woven. There are four candles in all. One candle is lit on the first Sunday of Advent, two candles on the second, three on the third, and four on the fourth.
The flame of the candle plays the role of an amulet from evil, points the way home and gives warmth and coziness.
Special services are held in churches. And children are given an Advent calendar. It usually consists of a cardboard house or a Christmas tree with windows for the days of the month 
Behind the windows you can find a sweet and some wise quote, an excerpt from Scripture or just a wish.
Christmas itself and the Advent month are very important events for Slovaks, irrespective of their social and religious background. They are traditionally associated with colorful fairs where various delicious things are sold.
Perhaps this year’s program will be less intense because of the pandemic. But still, the festive atmosphere and the Christmas expectation of a miracle make themselves felt 
This week, a Christmas tree, or rather a 17-year-old white fir tree with a height of 12 meters, has already been installed in the capital. The Christmas market in Stara Tržnica (Námestie SNP 25) and on the winter town beach (Tyršovo nábrežie) is already open.
