The residence permit in Slovakia is divided into temporary and permanent residence permits 
A permanent residence permit is granted for an indefinite, unlimited period of time. But you can count on it if you have been legally residing in Slovakia for at least 5 years.
This legal basis for a foreigner is most often a residence permit. But a residence permit is issued, as a rule, for a period of 1 to 3 years. Then it needs to be renewed.
If you were given a residence permit for only one year, you will have to apply for an extension after 12 months. If you were given a 3-year residence permit, you have a chance to renew it only once, and then you can apply for a residence permit.
It turns out that it is more favourable if the residence permit is given immediately for a longer period of time 
What does it depend on? What is taken into account?
The purpose that serves as the basis for applying for a residence permit.
► If you apply for a residence permit for the purpose of work, research or specialised activities, the duration of the first residence permit cannot exceed 2 years.
If you are applying for a residence permit for business purposes, it can be issued immediately for up to 3 years.
► A residence permit of up to 5 years can be obtained by family reunification.
► For studies – up to 6 years. In the latter case, however, it is worth considering that a residence permit for the purpose of study cannot be the basis for obtaining a permanent residence permit. If you want to stay in Slovakia, you should change the purpose of residence permit beforehand.
The amount of money in your account is also often taken into account.
The money requirements are based on the minimum subsistence level in Slovakia. If you show the required amount of money, there may be doubts about your ability to provide for yourself in the long term.
Sometimes they also look at the length of residency.
