What drinks are popular in Slovakia?

What do Slovaks drink? Which drinks are the most popular 😉 And are any of them native Slovak?

When it comes to non-alcoholic beverages, coffee and tea in Slovakia are no less valued than in other countries. But there are some peculiarities.

🍃 For example, it’s almost impossible to find loose leaf black or green tea in regular supermarkets.

There are bags of different varieties and types, there are interesting fruit teas… But for leaf tea – only in tea stores, where mostly elite varieties of tea with a corresponding price tag.

If you like sweet carbonated drinks, then you will appreciate the Slovak competitor of Coca-Cola – Kofola. It is made on the basis of fruit syrups from apples, currants, cherries and raspberries 🍒

Cafés and restaurants often offer citronade made from freshly squeezed lemon juice. If you like a refreshing sourness, you’ll love this drink.

🍷 Slovaks produce their own table red and white wines. Sparkling wines of the Slovak brand Hubert are very popular. In ordinary supermarkets you can find wines for all tastes and other European producers of high quality and at quite pleasant prices.

Popular local beers in Slovakia include Zlatý Pheasant, Kelt and Zorgon, Martiner, Smádní Mnich, Šariš, Kamzík, and Tatran 🍻

Borovicka is one of the national alcoholic drinks of Slovakia. It is quite strong, infused on the basis of juniper and belongs to the gin group.

The recipe for making Borovicka has been handed down in Slovakia from generation to generation since the 16th century.

🥛 Another drink that Slovaks are proud of is the so-called Tatra tea (Tatratea). If you see this name, don’t let it mislead you. The strength of this “tea”, and in fact – alcohol infused on herbs, can reach 72%. So be prepared 😉
