This town is one of the smallest in Slovakia ☝️ However, here you can visit the building of the oldest mint, the town castle, and the mysterious monastery.
Today we would like to introduce you to the town of Kremnica, located in the central part of Slovakia.
Kremnica was not called a golden town and one of the important smithies of Europe for nothing. In the past, the place was a center of gold mining.
According to historical data, the mining of precious metals began here in the 10th century. There is a legend connected with the foundation of the settlement. In this place, hunters caught a bird and on its feet, they noticed the particles of golden sand 🦅 That’s how they found the deposit of gold.
In 1328 the settlement was named a free royal mining and minting town. At the same time, a mint was founded here. Kremnica ducats were very valuable coins in medieval Europe. Even after 1970 when gold mining was stopped, the town was printing Slovak crowns.
If you’re in Kremnica, be sure to visit, take a look:
🏰 the town castle, which was built in the 13th-15th centuries,
🏰 burgher Gothic houses from the 14th-15th centuries,
🏰 the Franciscan monastery.
But the city is famous for more than that. In the church of St. Catherine, there is a rare organ in working condition. And in the summer there are concerts of organ music. And in August, many Slovaks and tourists come to the Kremnické gagy humorous festival. By the way, this year (25 – 27 August) it will also be held.
And don’t forget to treat yourself to local sweets and honey, which have been produced here for several hundred years 😉
