Knowing the language, at least at a basic level, will help you to get used to a new country faster and feel at home ![]()
Although many Slovak words are similar to Russian and Ukrainian words, it is almost impossible to understand fluent speech without speaking Slovak.
But how do you learn Slovak quickly and easily?
The first and most important rule – don’t be afraid to speak a new language and make mistakes! Remember that any development and learning without mistakes is simply impossible!
Try to exercise regularly, ideally daily. Let it be 10 minutes, but every day, rather than 2 hours just once a week or less.
Learn not only individual words, but also ready-made phrases for everyday use. Believe me, a word like “turtle” will be less relevant to you than the phrases “I would like to send/receive/buy…”, “Please tell me how to get through…” and others.
Do not limit yourself to memorizing words and rules. Use books, audiobooks, movies, songs in Slovak. This will help you to speak faster and understand the speech of others.
When listening to an audio recording of Slovak conversation, do not try to understand the whole meaning at once. Try first to catch the melody of the speech, its accents, pronunciation peculiarities. Then you will gradually understand individual words and then phrases.
Make it a rule to describe everything around you in Slovak as soon as you have time. Remember the names of objects, ask yourself, what would it be in Slovak, like this?
If you have already moved to Slovakia, try not to speak your native language or English. Going to the store? Going to the bank? Prepare a few relevant phrases in Slovak and practice them!
Slovaks themselves will be much happier if you speak to them in far from perfect Slovak than in perfect English, Russian or Ukrainian.
We ourselves once started from the basics in learning Slovak and want to share with you the materials we used in learning the language.
