ID Cards for Temporarily Protected Persons in Slovakia: Everything You Need to Know
As of December 15, 2024, Slovakia is introducing European-standard plastic ID cards for individuals with temporary protection. This new document format replaces paper certificates and offers several advantages. In this article, we will detail who needs to obtain an ID card, how the application process works, and what deadlines to consider.
If You Received Temporary Protection Before December 14, 2024
People who obtained temporary protection status before December 14, 2024, can continue using their paper document until it expires. However, they have the option to replace it with an ID card.
How to Obtain a Plastic ID Card:
- Book an appointment at a Migration Police office via the Reservation System (vulnerable groups can apply via email).
- Complete the application and prepare the necessary documents.
- Attend the appointment, submit your documents, and pay the administrative fee.
ID Card Cost and Processing Time:
- Standard issuance (30 days) – €10.
- Urgent issuance (2 working days) – €39.
If You Received or Plan to Receive Temporary Protection After December 15, 2024
According to the new regulations, individuals obtaining temporary protection after December 15, 2024, must follow a two-step process:
- First Step: When applying for temporary protection, you will receive an A4 paper document valid for 90 days.
- Second Step: Within 90 days, you must visit the Migration Police to apply for a plastic ID card.
Important! If you do not apply for an ID card within this period, there will be no penalties, but you will lose the benefits it provides.
Key Points to Consider
- Despite the expected extension of temporary protection until March 4, 2026, paper documents will only indicate the current expiration date.
- Holders of paper documents can print updated versions via the Ministry of Interior Portal, but without a police signature or stamp.
- Once you receive an ID card, your paper document becomes invalid.
- When booking an appointment at the Migration Police, select the category "Dočasné útočisko / Registrácia dočasného útočiska".
The introduction of plastic ID cards in Slovakia simplifies identification and enhances protection for individuals with temporary protection status. If you have further questions, check for updates on official websites or contact the Migration Police.
